History of the Royal Canadian Legion - Tecumseh, ON

Col. Paul Poisson Branch 261

Since 1934, Branch 261 has stood as a proud pillar of remembrance, service, and community in Tecumseh, Ontario. Named in honour of Colonel Paul Poisson—Tecumseh’s first mayor, a decorated veteran, and a beloved physician—our Legion was founded to support veterans, promote patriotism, and serve the people of our town with heart and purpose.

For generations, we’ve been more than a meeting hall. We’re a place where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and legacies are preserved. Whether it’s through our Remembrance Day ceremonies, community outreach, youth education, or support for military families, Branch 261 continues to uphold the values of service and sacrifice.

A Living Tribute in Art

In 2022, to mark Tecumseh’s 100th anniversary, our building became home to a breathtaking mural—a 127-foot-wide tribute painted by Windsor artist David Derkatz (DERKZ). This powerful artwork features scenes from Canadian military history, the iconic poppy, and a portrait of Colonel Poisson himself.

At its heart stands local veteran Joe McLeod, holding a poppy in remembrance. The mural has transformed our building into a living monument—one that speaks to the courage of those who served and the pride of a community that never forgets.

We invite you to visit, connect, and be part of our ongoing story. Whether you’re a veteran, a family member, or simply someone who believes in honoring those who came before us—there’s a place for you here.

Town of Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara

“This mural certainly is something for all of us to be proud of. It’s truly a lasting legacy to our beautiful community to be enjoyed for many many years to come.”

Poppy Campaign

Each year, from the last Friday in October until Remembrance Day, millions of Canadians wear a poppy as a visible pledge to never forget those who served and sacrificed.

Town of Tecumseh, incorporated in 1921, marked its 100th anniversary with a mural dedicating Colonel Paul Poisson.

He served as the town’s first mayor before going on to represent the region in provincial politics. Col. Paul Poisson was also a First World War veteran.
